Gunning for The Gunners; A preview of Chelsea vs Arsenal

by - September 16, 2017

It was the 24th of September, a day all Chelsea fans should remember. Chelsea and Arsenal met early on in last season's Premier League. It was a match that contained arguably the most significant moment of the season. In a dramatic, very one sided first half, a dominant Arsenal scored three times without reply and led to a half time change in Chelsea's formation by manager Antonio Conte which ultimately became a title winning decision.

Almost a year later and that changed formation has not only been replicated throughout the Premier League but right across Europe. Arsene Wenger was hesitant to also change to the 3-4-3 set up but now his team regularly play with a back three in the biggest matches so we can expect both sides to mirror each other on Sunday.

Both teams opened their European campaigns during the week. The Blues may have more than 48 hours extra recovery time in the build up to their clash, but Arsenal rested more of their first choice players.

The recent history of this tie can give belief to both clubs. Chelsea have won the last 5 league clashes between them at Stamford Bridge, but Arsenal not only won last season at The Emirates but also in the FA Cup Final and The Community Shield.

So what may prove to be a close game, key battles will tip the balance. Both defences can be very effective on their day - Koscielny, Mustafi and Monreal allowed just two shots on target in their last PL game. Both midfields are very combative, whilst Lacazette and Morata have already shown great goal prowess.

So it may centre around the battle down both flanks between the wing backs. Can Bellerin keep Alonso in check? Will Moses or Zappacosta be challenging against the impressive Kolasinac and which pairing will create the greater attack threat?

Arsenal will do their best to not allow their London rivals to move 6 points clear of them this early in the season but, as Chelsea showed last season, the result of one match isn't everything.
